Four killed as ship capsizes

From correspondents in Beijing

November 10, 2005

FOUR people died and 15 remained missing after a cargo ship capsized at a northeast China port, state media reported overnight.

The ship overturned while off-loading about 100 tonnes of bricks at Changhai County Haiyang Island port in Dalian city, Liaoning province, the Xinhua news agency said.

All 46 crew were thrown into the sea, but 27 were rescued. The bodies of two men and two women had been recovered by this evening, with more believed trapped inside or underneath the vessel, Xinhua said.

Cargo ships in China are forbidden from carrying passengers, but 39 of the people onboard were passengers, Xinhua cited a crew member saying.

The Dalian Maritime Bureau was investigating the accident.
