The ship’s bell and compass were among the items stolen in a dastardly raid on the wreck of the "Astrid".
Owner of the brigg, Pieter De Kam. said that while he was eternally grateful to the Irish people for the rescue of all 30 crew on board, he was not grateful to whatever Irish people have gone aboard his ship and stolen his compass, his bell and his binnacle. It appeared the thieves slipped in by nightfall at low tide in the night of July 27 to grab their ill-gotten loot.
